This image is an improvement over a number of earlier pictures; the first image was a pathed stylised wyvern that I drew out of simple experimentation, with a number of raster line work; this later developed into a low-res avatar for my best friend, who helped me define the art a bit more. This final piece is the reworked earlier path version with any raster also introduced in the form of paths; a little accident (turning the 45 degree sloped line art into paths from selections) skewed the sloped edges on the outer frame, a quirk I liked and thus kept as it were with some minor corrections.
The idea behind it is interesting, and the colours are nicely chosen. My advice, for this kind of work, is that (since it, to me, seems sort of awkward) it be posted in a smaller size; that is, since the design is not full of great details, the image would in fact look more detailed if smaller.
The Wyvern is clearly the best part (and quite symbol-like, at that!). Keep up the good work!
Thanks for commenting; yes, choosing the right shade of maroon was important for me, and I also loved the whole wyvern design, clearly one of my best stylisations thus far - my brother, though, says this should be a cover for a fetish book, what with the F like design and the beveled surfaces!
I changed the size to 600×600 from the original 800×800; 400×400 seemed a little to small as well, while this seems ideal, truly.
Yes, definitely much better! Now there's no unnaturally large empty space on it, so it presents itself much more like an image that a graphic file, if you know what I mean!
I think you'll still have to work to give it a more book-y feel, so good luck with it!
It could be an ornamented letter of a strange typeface that you could create. It's a nice, clean and clear symbol; I also like the way you used the colours to create the 3D effect. It is consistent.

Thank you for commenting on this; actually, the very first draft was a lot less defined, a sketchy path as I always draw them in Photoshop, but I couldn't help but notice that slight, distance shape of an F formed by the wings of the wyvern. This made me draw the curve of the tail back a bit more, redefine the curvature of the neck, head and frills, make the wings truly F-shaped to the point of making parts of them parallel, and toning the upper left corner up a bit.
As a side note, I'll have you know that this is one of my most mature designs; one of the few that has underwent such criticism and work on my part before bringing it in here. I'll have to say that the original 800×800 rasterization is the direct result of my passion for high resolution images.
This is a very nice image. The colors are chosen quite well and go hand-in-hand with each other. What did you use for your vector-image program? Illustrator, by any chance? I haven't worked with vector artwork in ages. I really love the picture in the center. It's a very nice piece of artwork, nothing in particular that I can tell. But in my eyes it looks like something just sketched out of boredom and when I do something like that, it seldom comes out looking as good.

I generally find that the best images I ever make are those I put very little emphasis on defining the final style and let my self roam freely.
The 'border' evolved from an earlier design (see my avatar? that's it), and then I at some point drew this in Photoshop, which I later defined with greater clarity, increasing the image size dramatically to get there. The final result is a combination of inspiration and many hours trying to make the original look better.
First off, everyone here at deviantART would like to say THANK YOU!!! We have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for the launch of version 6 and believe that this has been our best-received launch to date.
